Peels
Overview
Chemical peels are essential for maintaining and restoring skin’s health and appearance. These exfoliating treatments help resurface the uppermost layer of the skin to reveal a new, healthy skin underneath. Chemical peels are available in a variety of formulations, concentrations and depths to target a multitude of concerns including fine lines and wrinkles, blemishes, enlarged pores and uneven skin tone.
- Treatment Duration: 15-30 MINUTES
- Discomfort Level: 1-2
- Downtime: NONE-1 to 2 DAYS
The Details
How it Works
Chemical peels improve the texture and appearance of the skin by sloughing off the outer layers of the skin. During the treatment, a topical solution is applied to the area and works by reacting with the upper layer of the skin to effectively dissolve the bonds that bind the surface cells to the skin, ultimately revealing smoother and more vibrant skin underneath. The goal is to create a controlled, safe injury to the skin, thereby prompting skin to naturally repair itself.
Treatment Preparation
Do not exfoliate for at least 1 week prior to your treatment.
Stop using anti-aging or Accutane for at least 1 week to your treatment.
Your skill should be well-hydrated on the day of your chemical peel. Stop using any products that could be drying out your skin for at least 1 week prior to your treatment and drink lots of water.
Do not get a chemical peel close to an important event. You may require a little recovery time so it is best to wait until after your event to get the treatment done (or leave yourself sufficient time between the peel and the upcoming event).
Areas that can be Treated
Chemical peels are typically performed on the face, but can also be done on the neck and hands.
Skin peels are categorized by how deeply they penetrate the skin: superficial, medium or deep. The type and depth of the chemical peel administered will be determined by your clinician depending on the client’s skin type and concern.
What it Feels Like
You will be lying face-up during the chemical peel, which should last no more than 30 minutes. The technician will gently apply the chemical to your face or other areas you want treated.
Even a superficial chemical peel may produce a tingling or itching sensation on the skin. This mild discomfort will typically subside once the peel solution has been neutralized. Deeper peels can feel quite active and may require the application of a numbing cream beforehand.
After the peel is applied, you might notice the temperature of your skin change slightly in either direction. Either one of these is completely normal and just depends on the client.
Chemical peels are designed to extract impurities in the skin. While that happens, you might feel a sensation of tightness, which is also normal as long as it’s not excessive.
Expected Results
The difference that a chemical peel can make on your skin is incredible. Clients will usually see a drastic improvement in the overall appearance of their after just one treatment.
The new skin is usually smoother, tighter and less wrinkled than the old skin.
Number of Treatments
Peels can be administered in a series of treatments if necessary, spaced 4 weeks apart from one another.
After Care
Post-Treatment
The most noticeable symptom that you will experience is peeling on your face, which is the whole point of a chemical peel—to “peel” old skin off and reveal healthier skin beneath. Most clients peel around day 3 and may continue to peel a few days thereafter.
Your skin may be a little sensitive for a few days after the treatment, which is completely normal. You may also notice your skin is more sensitive to skin care products when you apply them so avoid exfoliating products for 1 week after your peel. Use gentle cleansers and a hydrating gel to help soothe the skin and avoid using hot water on your face.
Avoid sun exposure for at least 1 week after the peel and wear sunscreen during this time as well.
Superficial peels may produce some redness, similar to a mild sunburn, which may last 3 to 5 days.
More intense medium and deep peels will result in noticeable redness, swelling, blistering (in the case of deep peels), and/or peeling for 7 to 14 days.
Chemical peels are designed to extract impurities in the skin. While that happens, you might feel a sensation of tightness, which is also normal as long as it’s not excessive.
Follow Up
Your clinician will see you for a consult after the peel to assess the appropriate follow-up course of action. If additional peels are required, treatments will be spaced four weeks apart from one another.

Side Effects, Risks & Complications
Normal healing from a chemical peel involves redness of the treated skin.
Rarely, a chemical peel can cause treated skin to become darker than normal (hyperpigmentation) or lighter than normal (hypopigmentation).
Rarely, a chemical peel can cause scarring, typically on the lower part of the face. Antibiotics and steroid medications can be used to soften the appearance of the scars.
A chemical peel can cause a flare-up of the herpes virus—a virus that causes cold sores.
