The Details
How it Works
‘Massage’ is a general term for pressing, rubbing and manipulating your skin, muscles, tendons and ligaments. Massages may range from light stroking to deep pressure.
Massages involve applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes to target the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues. It may also promote faster healing by increasing blood flow and reducing inflammation.
When the vagus nerve is energized during a massage, a chemical called acetylcholine is released and acetylcholine promotes an overall sense of calm by slowing your heart rate.
Treatment Preparation
You do not need any special preparation before a massage.
Before your session starts, your therapist will ask you about your medical history, any symptoms and what you are hoping to get out of your massage experience.
Types of Massages
Sweedish Massage
Our most popular “feel good” massage—and for good reason. The technique is designed to relax the entire body and is wonderful for stress reduction. Soothing for the nervous system with long, relaxing strokes.
Hot Stone Massage
This massage therapy promotes deep muscle relaxation through the placement of smooth, water-heated stones at key points of the body. The hot stones are soothing and relaxing as they transmit heat deep into the body. Hot stone treatments also help loosen muscles, improve circulation and help alleviate aches and pains.
Upper-Body Massage
Therapists target the areas of pain and stress in the upper body to relieve muscle tension and alleviate discomfort. This treatment targets the front and back of the neck, shoulders, arms and hands to provide significant relief for clients who suffer from a variety of symptoms such as tension headaches and shooting pain.
What it Feels Like
A massage should never hurt. They are designed to feel good, regardless of the type of massage you get. Even a deep tissue massage should feel good and be deeply relaxing.
Your therapist will ask you about any problem areas and what type of pressure you prefer prior to the treatment starting.
Expected Results
No matter what type of massage you choose, you should feel calm and relaxed both during and after your treatment.
Massages offer both physical and psychological benefits. The release of the “feel good” endorphins helps facilitate ultimate relaxation.
Massages also increase joint mobility and flexibility, improve skin tone, increase blood flow and improve the recovery of soft tissue injuries.
Number of Treatments
Frequency of treatments depends solely on the client’s preferences. Some clients receive weekly treatments to relax and decompress, while others may opt to receive treatments when they have a specific area or current condition that needs addressed.
After Care
Post-Treatment
Drink lots of water and keep your body hydrated for at least 24 hours after treatment.
Take a nice hot shower or bath.
Do not do an intense workout.
The release of the “feel good” endorphins will have you feeling a natural high. You may be a little tired and if so, grab a snack to give yourself an added energy boost.
Stretching is often recommended after a massage.
Follow Up
Your next message should be done at your leisure. There doesn’t appear to be any evidence to suggest that it’s possible to have too many massages.
Typically, 1 massage per month is ideal for keeping your muscle tissue pliable and in good shape. This may increase if you have an injury or health condition that you and your therapist are treating.
Is this Suitable for Me?
Yes
- Pain or other kinds of symptoms associated with a variety of conditions that need addressed
- Need to unwind and relax
- Need to relieve stress
No
- You have wounds or other areas of the skin that are potentially weak
- Pregnant (in some cases). Please consult your health care physician before you get a massage
Side Effects, Risks & Complications
Naturally, your muscles are going to feel some soreness after a massage, since this penetrates the uppermost layers of the muscle. Muscles will then feel relaxed, potentially causing fatigue or muscle aches.
Using a heating pad or cold pack wrapped in a towel may help to relieve soreness.
As a result of releasing tension, feeling tired or groggy can be a factor after your treatment.
