Botox/Dysport/Jeuveau
Overview
Neurotoxins are used to address dynamic wrinkles that occur from muscle movement. The creases between eyes, around eyes, and on foreheads come from repetitive use of facial muscles and make us look tired, worried, unapproachable and older.
All neurotoxins have exactly the same active ingredient (botulism toxin) and vary only in the proteins surrounding it. All are very effective, some seem to work better than others in different individuals. A consultation with the physician will help decide which is best for you.

The Details
How it Works
Neurotoxins are proteins that are injected under the skin to relax overactive, wrinkle-causing muscles. They work by blocking the signals sent from the nerves to the muscles responsible for the contractions. Once the signal is blocked, the muscle cannot fully respond, and the wrinkle associated with the muscle movement softens and in many cases disappears.
Treatment Preparation
There is virtually no preparation needed prior to your procedure.
If you take non-prescriptive blood thinners (Ibuprofen or Aspirin) on a daily basis or tend to bruise easily, discontinuing those products for 1 week prior may be beneficial.
Areas that can be Treated
Brows (“11’s”), Forehead, Crow’s Feet, Brow Lift Bunny Lines, Neck Lines, Lips, Frown Lines, and Mouth Depressors.
What it Feels Like
Neurotoxins are injected directly into the targeted muscle area with a fine gauge needle. While it is not pain free, it is exceptionally tolerable.
After the injections, it is common to see small raised areas at the injection sites. These usually resolve within 1 hour of treatment.
Expected Results
The targeted muscles will gradually relax over 3 to 7 days after receiving your treatment and you can expect to see a significant improvement in fine lines and wrinkles.
It can lift your eyebrows and make your eyes appear more open in general and you will have a more relaxed, refreshed and youthful appearance.
Number of Treatments
You should see noticeable improvements after just one treatment.
Treatments are usually done no sooner than every 3 months, but some experience muscle relaxation for up to 4 to 6 months depending on the individual metabolism and activity/strength of those muscles.
After Care
Post-Treatment
- Try to exercise your treated muscles for 1 to 2 hours after treatment (i.e. practice frowning, raising your eyebrows or squinting). This will help to work the neurotoxin into your muscles. Although this is thought to help, it will not impact your treatment negatively if you forget to do this.
- Avoid taking Advil, aspirin, vitamin E, etc. in order to reduce the risk of bruising. You may take acetaminophen (Tylenol).
- Do not rub or massage the treated areas for 4 hour after your treatment.
- Do not perform yoga or any strenuous exercise for 4 hours after treatment.
- Avoid facials or saunas for 4 hours after treatment to minimize the risk of temporary bruising. Feel free to shower and go about most other daily activities.
- Do not lie down for 4 hours after treatment. This is to avoid the risk of pressure on the treated areas (from your pillow) and to avoid the risk of having the area rubbed accidentally.
- Be assured that any bumps or marks should go away within 1 hour of treatment.
- Make-up can be applied immediately after treatment with a gentle touch, not rubbing.
- Results of your treatment may take up to 10 days to take full effect. Please wait at least 14 days before assessing if you are pleased with your results.
- Because neurotoxin injections require a special technique, in order to customize the injections to your individual muscular structure, it is important that your muscle activity recovers, but that your skin is not creasing to the point from where it started.
- Common side effects include localized pain, bruising, swelling or tenderness, headache or dry eyes.
Follow Up
To maintain results desired, follow-up treatments should occur no sooner than every 3 to 6 months, or whenever you start to notice the effects of the neurotoxins are fading.
