The Details
How it Works
The procedure uses both laser and radiofrequency energy to remove dark and some of the light hair in patients with light skin. Energy from the laser interacts with the pigment in the hair but not the pigment in the skin, allowing us to remove the hair without heating the skin.
Treatment Preparation
The area must be shaved 24 hours prior to the treatment.
No makeup, lotion or deodorant should be used on the day of the treatment.
Do not use any self-tanner or spray tan products for at least 4 weeks prior to the treatment.
Avoid waxing, threading or tweezing in the area for at least 4 weeks prior to the treatment.
Some medications or supplements may increase the risk of bruising. Please consult with your physician
Avoid treatments that may irritate the skin for 1 to 2 weeks prior to treatment (depilatories, harsh chemicals, etc.).
History of herpes or cold sores may require additional anti-viral prescription prior to your treatment.
When you arrive for your procedure, a numbing agent is applied to the area being treated for approximately 30 minutes. Once the area is numb, the topical solution is wiped off and an ultrasound gel is applied to cover the targeted area.
Areas that can be Treated
Virtually anywhere you have unwanted hair can be treated!
Common treatment areas include: Face, Upper Lip, Chin, Arms & Hands, Neck, Sideburns, Chest, Underarms, Bikini, Legs & Feet and Back.
What it Feels Like
After the area is numb and the ultrasound gel has been applied, the provider applies pulses of laser energy to your skin. When administered, it feels like a rubber band snap or a momentary hot spot. Immediate cooling of the area minimizes the discomfort and prevents side effects.
Expected Results
You can expect to see a reduction of 75% to 95% of your unwanted hair after a series of treatments (typically 6).
Since hair grows in 3 phases, follow-up treatments will be required for maximum reduction. Not all hair is removed in a single treatment because hair follicles exist at different growth stages, some in which hair is pigmented and others in which hair is not pigmented. To be absorbed by laser energy, hair strands must have pigment.
Lighter colored hair requires more treatments than darker colored hair. That being said, the darker the pigmentation of the hair, the more successful the treatment/removal process is likely to be.
Number of Treatments
Several factors influence the ease of removal and number of treatments needed for laser hair removal. Therefore, this can vary from client to client.
Most clients require a series of 6 treatments to reduce the unwanted hair. Treatments are typically spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart from one another to coincide with hair growth phases.
A client’s skin type, hair type, hair color, and the location of the unwanted hair all impact the results and frequency.
Light-hair colored hair require more treatments than dark hair.
Hair in the underarms, bikini line, and legs are easy to remove. Facial hair typically requires a longer series of treatments due to hormonal effects.
After Care
Post-Treatment
Immediately following treatment, minor redness and bumps are common. They may last up to 2 hours or longer. It is normal for the treated area to feel like a sunburn for a few hours.
Bruising and swelling are less common, but may occur and will resolve with time.
Cleanse the area treated gently with a mild soap. Skin should be patted dry and not rubbed for the first 48 hours.
Do not use any makeup, lotion, moisturizer or deodorant for the first 24 hours after the treatment.
Dead hairs will begin to shed 5-30 days after your treatment. Stubble (dead hair being shed from the hair follicle) will appear and then fall out, which is completely normal.
Exfoliate regularly to help speed up the shedding of the hair. Washing and exfoliating, along with shaving, will help the dead hair push its way out of the follicle.
Avoid sun exposure and use a broad spectrum sunscreen to reduce the change of light spots for 2 months.
Do not pick, scratch, wax, thread or tweeze the area that was treated during the course of your laser treatments.
Follow Up
A series of treatments will be recommended by your clinician and the course of the treatment will depend on the area being treated and the client’s skin and hair type.
Treatments are typically spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart from one another which coincides with hair growth phases.
Is this Suitable for Me?
Yes
- Laser hair removal is a great option for almost everyone
- That being said, the ideal hair type for laser hair removal is dark and coarse
No
- White/gray hair
Side Effects, Risks & Complications
Although uncommon, a superficial blister or scab may develop after treatment.
Infection is very rare because the skin is not broken during treatments.
The “Laser Hair Removal” Difference
Laser hair removal is one of the only treatments available for permanent hair reduction. Our 1064 Yag Laser has even been successful in treating clients who have found light-based hair removal treatments ineffective.
Creams, shaving, waxing and threading and other temporary methods may not give you the smooth results you are after and can also be damaging to the skin.
