Overview
Intense pulse light is a non-invasive, non-ablative treatment that delivers high-intensity light into deeper layers of the skin to improve fine lines and winkles, vascular lesions, redness, broken capillaries, and sun spots. The range and wavelength of the light emitted during the treatment can be adjusted to accommodate your specific skin needs and concerns.

The Details
How it Works
Also known as photorejuvenation or a photofacial, intense pulsed light is a non-ablative treatment that emits intense, visible pulses of light onto a targeted area without damaging the surrounding skin. The light energy is absorbed by melanin (responsible for skin pigment) and hemoglobin (red blood cells in the blood vessels). As a result, these structures become damaged and are absorbed by the body or brought to the surface of the skin where they will slough off.
Treatment Preparation
If possible, please do not wear makeup to your treatment.
For 1 week prior, avoid any irritants to your skin such as any products containing Retin-A, retinol, benzoyl peroxide, glycolic/salicylic acids, astringents or Vitamin C.
For at least 2 weeks prior, do not allow your skin to receive significant sun exposure, use a tanning bed or self-tanning products, get a spray tan or use any artificial pigments on your skin at all.
Avoid anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin to minimize side-effects.
Please inform your clinician if you have started any new oral medications or new topical medication, creams, lotions or ointments as they may affect your treatment.
Men are to be cleanly shaved prior to treatment.
Please let our physician care team know if:
- You are prone to cold sores
- Suffer from vitiligo
- History of melasma
- Have skin irritations such as eczema or psoriasis
Areas that can be Treated
Ideal for any part of your face, neck and décolleté with skin redness, telangiectasia (tiny veins) or brown spots. Great for age spots on your hands and arms as well.
What it Feels Like
IPL treatments are not entirely pain-free, although the level of discomfort depends on your individual threshold of pain. When the pulse of the light is delivered, patients will experience a mild pinching or stinging sensation compared to the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. However, no numbing agent is required or necessary.
A topical cooling gel is applied to the treatment area prior to the procedure. Protective goggles are worn
Expected Results
Intense pulsed light is successful in addressing fine lines and winkles, dark spots, visible capillaries, and redness.
Results generally occur 1 to 3 weeks after your first treatment.
Number of Treatments
Most clients will see visible results after just 1 treatment. While 2 to 3 treatments are usually sufficient for optimal results, a longer series of treatments may be recommended for excessively sun-damaged skin.
Treatments are typically spaced 4 weeks apart.
After Care
Post-Treatment
-
Immediately following treatment, you may notice some minor redness and swelling, similar to that of a sunburn. The level of redness is dependent on the type of treatment and your skin’s sensitivity. If side effects are experienced, most resolve within three to seven days.
-
Avoid tanning or sun exposure without sunscreen.
-
Do not use any strong corrective topical products. Use cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen until you skin feels calmer.
Follow Up
Your initial course of treatments (typically 1 to 3) will be spaced 4 weeks apart. Maintenance treatments may be required thereafter depending on each individual client’s needs.
